Homemade Natural Antiseptic Mouthwash

If you’ve been hanging around Healing Cuisine for a while now, you’ve probably noticed I like to make my own homemade and natural body care products.  Not only are they more clean and healthy, but frugal, too!

Benefits of Homemade Mouthwash

My husband is a doctor and has to be 1-on-1 with his patients throughout the day.  He doesn’t always have time to brush after lunch and appreciates having a mouthwash at his office to rinse with quickly it he needs to refresh.  Because it was in our price range, we had purchased the Spry brand mouth wash that claimed to be more natural and is sugar-free.  After purchasing two bottles on a buy one-get one deal, we found it contained preservatives Ethanol, Polysorbate 20, and Sodium Benzoate.  Yikes!

Then we started a search for a truly natural mouthwash, and were shocked at the price!  Double or triple that of conventional mouthwashes!  It was time to make a DIY version!  There are many benefits:

This is Dr. Dave’s favorite blend of antiseptic ingredients that truly freshen your breath and keep your mouth feeling clean for hours.  We keep a bottle at his office and in our bathroom.  If you want to make this family-friendly, simply take out the alcohol and replace with apple cider vinegar.  (Alcohol mouthwash is not recommended for children.)

Save Recipe[1]
  1. 2 cups filtered and remineralized water
  2. 4 tsp vodka
  3. 10 drops pure liquid stevia
  4. 6-10 drops food-grade essential oil
  5. (We use peppermint flavor from Young Living)
  1. Add all ingredients to a bottle, cover and shake. Shake well before each use. You will notice the alcohol allows the oil and water to mix without separating.
  1. Alcohol mouthwash is not recommended for children. To make this family-friendly and kid-safe, replace the vodka with Bragg's brand apple cider vinegar.
  2. Other popular essential oil flavors for mouthwash are lemon, clove, Thieves, thyme, orange, or lavender. I recommend the Young Living brand because they are therapeutic and food-grade safe.
